{"id":39,"date":"2022-07-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-21T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/westmaitlanddentistry.com\/charcoal-toothpaste-is-it-healthy\/"},"modified":"2022-07-21T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T00:00:00","slug":"charcoal-toothpaste-is-it-healthy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.westmaitlanddentistry.com\/blog\/2022\/07\/21\/charcoal-toothpaste-is-it-healthy\/","title":{"rendered":"Charcoal Toothpaste: Is It Healthy?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A common trend we\u2019ve been seeing lately is the use of charcoal infused tooth products.\u00a0 These products claim that they whiten your teeth.\u00a0 They also promote bacteria removal from your mouth as well.\u00a0 Let\u2019s dive deep and see what are the risks and benefits of charcoal toothpaste.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First off what is charcoal toothpaste?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Charcoal is a form of carbon that is made by burning natural substances such as coconut shells and wood.\u00a0 This becomes oxidized and formed into a fine powder which is placed into toothpaste.\u00a0 These charcoal toothpastes generally don\u2019t contain fluoride.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does it whiten teeth?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes and no.\u00a0 Due to charcoal\u2019s abrasive nature it may remove staining on the outside of the tooth called extrinsic staining.\u00a0 But it cannot penetrate the tooth to remove the staining within, called intrinsic staining.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Does it have an antibacterial effect?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No studies have shown that there is a significant antibacterial effect with charcoal toothpaste.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can it do any damage?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes, it can damage teeth with its abrasiveness leading to loss of enamel.\u00a0 The enamel is the hard, white outer surface layer of your tooth.\u00a0 The more you strip it away the more yellow your teeth will look since the layer below it, the dentin, is a yellower color.\u00a0 The dentin is also a sensitive layer so with more of your enamel gone you may notice increased sensitivity.<\/p>\n<p>The dark charcoal can get into small gaps you may have on your teeth.\u00a0 This can range from existing dental work or micro cracks your teeth.\u00a0 This type of staining is difficult to remove.\u00a0 Finally without any fluoride in the toothpaste it leaves you susceptible to cavities.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The American Dental Association has not found any evidence that charcoal toothpaste is safe or effective for your teeth.\u00a0We agree and do not recommend any charcoal based tooth product. \u00a0When considering whitening your teeth remember there are safer options to choose from such as <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.westmaitlanddentistry.com\/blog\/dos-and-donts-for-a-whiter-smile\/\">in office<\/a><strong> or take home whitening trays. \u00a0For toothpaste recommendations refer to the <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ada.org\/resources\/research\/science-and-research-institute\/ada-seal-of-acceptance\/product-search?utm_medium=paid&amp;utm_content=90thanniversary&amp;utm_campaign=seal&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjw8uOWBhDXARIsAOxKJ2FILu1jQRWBRfDnMpYFXL4KzSj_KITbme0_fhryexVnzGuQMtMpoCoaAis1EALw_wcB\">ADA\u00a0website<\/a><strong> to see if your toothpaste is accepted and\u00a0recommended.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A common trend we\u2019ve been seeing lately is the use of charcoal infused tooth products.\u00a0 These products claim that they whiten your teeth.\u00a0 They also promote bacteria removal from your mouth as well.\u00a0 Let\u2019s dive deep and see what are the risks and benefits of charcoal toothpaste.
