What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a serious condition that is estimated to affect nearly 30 million people in the United States. Most of these cases remain undiagnosed, causing individuals to suffer from interrupted sleep every night and worsening overall health.

There are three types of sleep apnea: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea (CSA), and complex sleep apnea. OSA is the most common and occurs when an obstruction blocks the airway (usually relaxed throat muscles), causing you to stop breathing for 10 seconds or more. This can occur multiple times throughout the night, leading to chronic fatigue and other serious symptoms.

Some general signs that you may have sleep apnea include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Daytime fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Forgetfulness
  • Drowsy driving
  • Loss of libido
  • Morning headaches
  • Dry mouth
